Ruth Taylor

Artist Interview

Nature is your subject matter, how did your love of nature begin?

My paintings are inspired by landscape and the effect of mankind and the weather on our countryside.

Often your paintings are oil on board. What draws you to use these particular materials?

I paint with oils on board because I find board is more forgiving than canvas when it comes to my scratching, scraping and sanding techniques.

Tell us a bit more about your journey to becoming an artist. Did you study art?

I did a foundation course at Eastbourne College of Art and a degree in printed textiles at West Surrey College of Art and Design.

Where is your studio and what makes it a satisfying place to work?

My studio is at the bottom of the garden, it is very small but it is placed in such a position that even in winter the sun streams in through the door. Once I am in the studio in my painting smock with the radio on, I hope I can have a couple of hours of uninterrupted creativity, but it is not always the case.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

The most enjoyable thing about being an artist is creating something that gives other people pleasure, a painting that reminds them of a place they knew and loved.

Do you have any favourite places, that you return to?

I grew up in Sussex at the foot of The South Downs, a landscape which is still my main inspiration.

What was the last exhibition you saw that inspired you?

As someone that considers themself to be a Sussex artist, I particularly enjoyed the exhibition of works by the county at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester earlier this year.
