Ted Summerhayes makes beautifully carved wooden sculptures from locally sourced wood near his studio in Kent.

Working in a variety of different woods, Ted explores the relationship between maker and material, often letting the wood itself dictate as to what direction the piece will go. Guiding factors include the grain and the cutting properties of a particular piece of wood. Ted has developed a remarkable finishing process which he often uses with great effect, giving the work a rather beautiful and luxurious sheen. This involves charring the surface of the wood repeatedly, and finishing with a wax to highlight the incredible patterns of the grain, especially with Ash.
